Ravindra Jadeja picked up four wickets, and his spin partner Ravi Ashwin scalped three. Umesh Yadav dismissed the remaining two Aussies, and thus visitors could only take a lead of 88 runs.
In reply, the Indian second innings saw the Indian top order fail miserably. Except for Pujara (59), no one else in the Top 5 scored more than 15 runs. Nathan Lyon’s sharp bowling helped him dismiss eight Indian batters. In what looked to be a promising comeback by the bowlers, Indian batting disappointed, and the team was dismissed for just 163 runs with a lead of 75 runs.
Chasing 76 runs on Day 3, Australia lost Khawaja on the very second delivery, but it was the only joy that turned out for the Indian camp. Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head ensured that they didn’t lose any wickets further and helped guide their team to a 9-wicket victory.
India vs Australia :- Australia counters spin well, fails to capatalise on momentum
On day 1, after dismissing India for 109, the Aussies started their batting with an intent to take on Indian spinners. Openers Travis Head and Usman Khawaja tried to give the game a fiery start, but in the process of doing so, Travis Head perished. In order to defend a straight delivery off the back foot, Head failed to connect bat and ball and was adjudged LBW after India reviewed the on-field decision.
Labuschagne got a lucky escape when he was bowled off Jadeja’s delivery, but the latter had overstepped, and thus the decision was reversed.
The duo then stitched a 96-run stand when Jadeja finally dismissed Labuschagne. In the span of nine overs, Jadeja dismissed Khawaja and then further made Smith his prey.
On the morning of Day 2, Australia played watchfully early on. After an hour, it was all about Indian bowlers hitting the right length. Ashwin picked up 3 wickets, and Umesh Yadav with 2 wickets made sure that even after a promising start, Australia didn’t cross the 200-run mark.
India vs Australia : Indian batting disappoints
In the past two matches, the Indian lower order did the bulk of the scoring, but it didn’t fire right in this match, which exploited its weakness. The top-order batters lacked patience, and poor shot choices added salt to the injuries.
Shubhman Gill and Rohit Sharma yet again failed to provide a big start. Kohli’s return to form in limited formats didn’t transition into whites. All the promising starts were wasted due to poor shot selection. Only Pujara showed some intent and played well with the spin to score his 35th test at 50.
Shreyas Iyer counterattacked with some aggressive batting but was caught brilliantly by Usman Khawaja. No other batsmen fired well, and India just managed to take a lead of 75 runs.
Batting on the third day, the Aussies chased down the target in just one session.
India vs Australia : “We need to regroup and try and understand what we did right in the first 2 games” Rohit Sharma
In the Post match presentation, India skipper was asked about his views on this loss, he said “When you lose a Test match, there are a lot of things which didn’t go our way, to start with we didn’t bat well in the 1st innings, we understand how important it is to put runs on the board in the 1st innings and when they got 80-90 runs lead, we had to produce another innings with the bat but we were not able to do that again. We got just 75 on the board, if we batted well in the 1st innings, things would have been slightly different. We haven’t thought about it yet (WCT final), we have sometime to think about what we need to do there (Ahmedabad Test). We need to regroup and try and understand what we did right in the first 2 games.”
